Are Arsenal interested in Oblak? Read More

The Express have quoted a report from Spanish newspapers AS that Arsenal are interested in bringing Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak to the Emirates this summer.
Petr Cech has often been criticized this season for some mistakes unusual for a ‘keeper of such class and experience, and the report suggests the Gunners are looking to solve the problem by bringing in the £88 million-rated Slovenian international.
Despite the criticism, Cech recently kept his 200th Premier League clean sheet – the first goalkeeper in the Premier League to do so, while David Ospina has put in a decent performance every time he was given a chance.
There is absolutely no doubt that Oblak is among the best goalkeeper in the world. He is truly magnificent in every aspect of the role between the sticks – an incredible shot-stopper, always dominant in his box, a great game-reader and always quick to react.
But with all those qualities, it is hard to imagine Atletico Madrid letting him go for anything less than his reported buyout clause of £88 million – a world-record fee for a goalkeeper. Also, there is the issue of whether he would want the move to happen. The Gunners could possibly offer him better wages and a new challenge that the Premier League would certainly be, but at Madrid Champions League football is almost a certainty every season, which at this point unfortunately cannot be said of Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger, or any manager that might replace him in the near future, already has two very good goalkeepers at his disposal, albeit one of them 35 years old and not exactly having a great season. There are matters far more pressing to solve in the team, other positions to address, and that is probably the main reason why it is hard to imagine the club spending £88 million on Oblak at this point.
