Dortmund announce new record signing as replacement for Arsenal-bound Sokratis

Borrusia Dortmund have announced the signing of Mainz defender Abdou Diallo who is expected to replace Sokratis Papastathopoulos who is expected to join Arsenal, according to ESPN.

The 22-year-old center back who has made 27 Bundesliga appearances since his €5 million move from AS Monaco just last summer has impressed so much that Dortmund paid €28 million to sign him, making him their second most expensive acquisition in history.

Speaking on the transfer, Dortmund director of sports Michael Zorc said; “ Abdou Diallo has a lot of the qualities that we expect from a signing,”
“The combination of his great potential and his versatility is what made Abdou such an interesting prospect for us. “
The France U-21 captain had been linked with a move to Arsenal earlier in the summer, but will be moving to Dortmund instead to replace a man who will eventually move to Arsenal.
The Greek defender is expected to join the Gunners in early July after a €16 million deal was agreed for him.

The Gunners had long monitored Diallo from his time at Monaco, but failed to make a move for him, this summer however, with a lot speculations linking them to the youngster again, they opted for experience instead in 30-year-old Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Diallo becomes Dortmund’s fifth signing this summer, and the club is yet to sell any player, but still have their books balanced after the expensive sales of Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal last season
