Arsenal Football Transfer: Arsenal reportedly tried to sign 20-year-old pacy defender in summer

The London-based outfit Arsenal made an approach to land Hamza Mendyl this summer, the star has confirmed.

The full-back was courted by a whole number of clubs following an impressive campaign in Ligue 1 with LOSC Lille.

Arsenal were believed to have been interested, but work permit issues denied Hamza the chance to join the Gunners.

After plenty of talks surrounding his future, it was announced that Bundesliga giants FC Schalke had completed a deal to land the promising 20-year-old defender.

Reflecting on what was a hectic transfer window for Moroccan, Mendyl spoke to the German tabloid newspaper Bild and revealed that he had proposals from both Newcastle United and Arsenal regarding a potential transfer.

“Yes, there were offers from Arsenal and Newcastle United. The clubs were interested. But being a Moroccan, it would not have been easy to get a work permit in England.”- said Morocco international.

Mendyl plays usually on the left-hand side of the defence and it looks like the Gunners had identified him as a potential option to bolster this position given the injury sustained by Bosnia and Herzegovina international Sead Kolasinac.
