Nacho Monreal has come out in defence of Mesut Ozil following his teammates alleged bust-up with Unai Emery.

Ozil was dropped by the new Arsenal head coach for the visit of West Ham a fortnight ago.

The German had reportedly fell-out with Emery after he was omitted from the squad for last month’s 3-1 win over Hammers, despite Emery’s claim that the German was ill.

However, full-back Monreal has rubbished suggested’s Ozil has caused tensions with Emery.

“People have been a bit unfair with him,” Monreal said to Sky Sports ahead of Spain’s UEFA Nations League opener against England on Friday.

“He is a very famous player and obviously people love talking about him. Recently, it is always bad things. Like last time, he was sick and that’s why he didn’t play.
Monreal believes people have been ‘unfair’ to Ozil

“People started to invent that he had a problem with the manager. It wasn’t like that. He got a cold, he was sick, that’s it. That’s why he didn’t play.”
Ozil did return to the Gunners XI that edged passed Cardiff City 3-2 last weekend.

His turbulent start to the season, which has seen him criticised for his body language and demeanour, follows a surprise retirement to international football.
