Fulham Overtake Arsenal In Race To Sign This Chelsea Defender: What Should Be Emery’s Play?

According to a recent report by the Sun , Arsenal have been overtaken by Fulham in the race to secure the services of Gary Cahill from Chelsea this month. The same report has claimed that the English defender will be permitted to go out on a six-month loan deal for the remainder of this campaign.

This recent revelation will be a big blow for the Gunners as their defensive record this season has been poor. Unai Emery’s side have shipped in 31 goals in 21 league matches so far which has seen them fall behind in the race to earn a top 4 spot at the end of this season.

The North London outfit are currently sitting in the 5th spot of the league table after winning 4-1 against the Cottagers on New Year’s Day. However, that result followed a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield last weekend which once again exposed the lacklustre nature of the Arsenal backline.

Cahill’s arrival for the remainder of this campaign could be a clever short-term move for the North London giants if they can fend off interest from Fulham during this January transfer window. The 33-year-old has featured in just seven matches for the Pensioners this term which is simply not good enough for a player of his quality.

A player of Cahill’s vast experience will undoubtedly help Arsenal grind out results during the business end of the campaign. The English centre-back has previously won the Premier League twice, the UEFA Champions League once and the FA Cup twice with Chelsea so he knows what it takes to win.

The North London outfit currently have the likes of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Laurent Koscielny, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Konstantinos Mavropanos who have all struggled to find consistency at the back under Emery’s tutelage this season. Hence, a player of Cahill’s experience could be the perfect candidate to turn things around for the better at the Emirates Stadium.

He will be an ideal asset in the Arsenal dressing room who can lead and inspire others to follow in his footsteps and strive for greatness. Hence, Emery should do everything in his power to secure a six-month loan move for the Pensioners defender.
