Unai Emery reveals what he told Mesut Ozil before snubbing Arsenal midfielder against Chelsea

Arsenal boss Unai Emery told Mesut Ozil to be ready to play against Chelsea before leaving the midfielder on the bench at the Emirates.

First-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny sealed a 2-0 victory for Arsenal to close the gap on Chelsea in the Premier League table to just three points.

Ozil, who has been in and out of the side since Emery took over the reins, was omitted from Arsenal’s squad altogether a week before at West Ham and was an unused substitute on Saturday.

The playmaker’s future remains uncertain but his £350,000-a-week wages at Arsenal make a January transfer move extremely unlikely.

Emery claims he would have been comfortable playing Ozil against top-four rivals Chelsea despite the German only making 12 league starts this season.

‘He was on Saturday okay to play, but we decided not play [him],’ Emery revealed after the win.

‘I spoke with him also and I want to him be ready for the match today, for the next matches like all the players in the team.

‘Against Chelsea, I have the confidence in him if he played, I think he could do like we want and the next matches we are going to need every player and also his quality.’

Ozil will be desperate for game-time when Arsenal host Manchester United in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night.

He missed Arsenal’s third-round victory over Blackpool with a knee injury.
