Arsenal looking to strengthen defence by dealing rated centre-back

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are reportedly keeping a close eye on German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach versatile defender Matthias Ginter.

The all-around centre-back has helped the Bundesliga club climb to second in the German top flight, eight points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Spurs and the Gunners are on the lookout for new central defenders and Sky Sports state Mauricio Pochettino’s side tried to sign Ginter before he sealed a £14.8 million transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach from Dortmund in 2017.

Tottenham Hotspur have activated one-year extensions in the deals of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, whose deals now run until June of 2020, but could lose the latter this summer window as he has a £25 million release (buy-out/exit) clause in his contract.

Meanwhile, Unai Emery’s men are in desperate need of centre-backs this summer transfer market due to the latest injuries.

They have lost English star Rob Holding to a serious knee injury, while Germany international Shkodran Mustafi has struggled for form and ageing star Laurent Koscielny has recently returned from a long stint on the sidelines.

Defensive injuries have also forced the Gunners boss Unai Emery to play full-backs Stephan Lichtsteiner and Nacho Monreal in the middle of the defence.

Arsenal have conceded 37 league goals thus far this campaign – the most of any top six clubs and Matthias, who has been capped 23 times by his country, could shore up their leaky defence.

The 25-year-old star has two-and-a-half years remaining on his existing contract, although Borussia Monchengladbach can extend that by a further one year.
