Denis Suarez appears to disagree with Unai Emery over his best position for Arsenal

Unai Emery may have pushed hard for Arsenal to sign Denis Suarez in the January window, but the pair already seem to be on different pages over his best position.

Speaking prior to the 25-year-old’s loan move to the Emirates, Emery was asked where he envisaged Suarez playing, saying: ‘We need wingers. Suarez, who I know, has this quality.’

During their time together at Sevilla in the 2014-15 season, Suarez was predominantly used on the flanks, with Emery recalling: ‘He was playing as a left or right winger when he was with me.’

However, since returning to Barcelona he has frequently been used in a central midfield role and still sees that as his primary position, likening his style to Andres Iniesta.

‘I’m a midfielder and my best quality is my final ball,’ Suarez told Arsenal’s official website.

‘The person I look up to most in the world of football is Andres Iniesta. He’s always been my idol, ever since I was young.

‘As well as the fact that he plays in a similar position to me, I was also able to spend two years with him – I learned a lot from him. It’s always been a massive compliment to be compared to him.’

Although Suarez may not get many opportunities to play in central midfield under Emery, he is delighted to be reunited with his countryman.

He continued: ‘I have a very good relationship with him. I spent a year with him at Sevilla when we won the Europa League.

‘I think he’s a very demanding coach and one of the best coaches in the world right now – I’ve been saying that for a while. I’m really happy to have the chance to work with him again and I hope that the rest of the season is successful for me and the club.’
