Arsenal boss Unai Emery made 'significant' Mesut Ozil decision in Rennes defeat

UNAI EMERY is starting to change his mind on Mesut Ozil, according to Arsenal legend Martin Keown.

Ozil has fallen down the midfield pecking order at the north London club under Emery this season, with the midfielder struggling to impress his new boss.

The 30-year-old has only started 14 of the club's 29 Premier League games during the current campaign.

While he has admittedly missed fixtures purely down to illness and fitness reasons, he's often been left out simply down to Emery's preference not to play him.

It's unknown why the Spaniard prefers to keep Ozil out of his starting XI, but it's reported to be down to his poor work-rate and the attitude he displays.

However, he appears to finally be working his way back into the Arsenal line-up having started in two of their last three fixtures in all competitions.

The German notably started in the club's 1-3 Europa League defeat to Rennes on Thursday night at the Roazhon Park.

It was just Ozil's fourth European start of the season, and the first time he had been called upon away from home since Boxing Day.

The club drew 1-1 against Brighton on December 26, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagging the north London club's goal at the time.

““It tells you about the improvement he has made lately.””

Ozil was, however, dragged off at half-time with Alex Iwobi coming on as his replacement at the Amex Stadium.

And Keown, who played for the Gunners between 1993 and 2004, is starting to believe Emery has changed his mind on midfielder over the last few weeks.

“Ozil starting in an away game for the first time since Boxing Day is quite significant,” he said on BT Sport.

“It tells you about the improvement he has made lately.”

Michael Owen was also in agreement with Keown on BT Sport's Europa League broadcast.

However, the former Liverpool striker believes Ozil still has a lot to improve on if he is to keep his place in the Arsenal team.

“What can he do? Create goals, score goals,” Owen said. “He’s pretty ineffective without the ball, we all know that.

“But he’s so good with the ball that that’s why he’s in the team. So he has to contribute something in possession."

Arsenal's next game is against Manchester United on Sunday in the Premier League as the two sides battle for a vital three points in the race for top four.
