Gunners must pay at least £43m

ARSENAL have been handed a transfer boost when it comes to landing Nicolas Pepe - but the Gunners will have to pay big-money for the attacker.

The Lille star has been impressive this season, attracting a wealth of interest from England.

Arsenal have been the long-term frontrunners for Pepe's signature and were heavily linked with the 23-year-old in January.

And the Gunners have been handed a boost by Lille boss Christophe Galtier, who concedes the club will struggle to stop him leaving for a bigger club in the near future.

"It's difficult to keep these type of players in our league. When the biggest clubs in Europe call you, it's really complicated," he said.

"If Nicolas keeps going like this and improves his statistics by the end of the season, he will be on the shortlist of all of Europe's big clubs.

"The player's desire is also important.

"I am sure that, if the moment comes, everything will be very transparent. We will all try to find the best solution possible."

However, Lille's president Gerard Lopez has also spoken about Pepe's future this week.

And the club chief admits it will cost Arsenal or any club a lot of money to sign the Ivorian.

When asked about Pepe's future, Lopez told Canal Plus: "That does not just depend on the club. It also depends on the player. He deserves to play at the highest level. We have offers yes.

"In England, there are clubs. We have had offers worth €50m (£43.3m). We will not sell for less, we have even refused a €50m bid.

"We had an offer from China worth €80m (£68.8m) with an astronomical salary, but he didn't want to go."

Arsenal were linked with Pepe in January but couldn't land the star due to a lack of funds.

Unai Emery was only allowed to bring in loan signings during the winter window.

Denis Suarez arrived on a temporary deal until the end of the season.
