Arsenal legend Robert Pires talks up Ismaila Sarr transfer move

Robert Pires believes Rennes forward Ismaila Sarr would be a quality addition to Unai Emery’s squad were he to complete a move to Arsenal this summer.

The 21-year-old winger has notched up ten goals and 11 assists in all competitions for Rennes this season and caught the eye in the side’s Europa League tie with Arsenal earlier this month.

Sarr scored the third goal in Rennes’ 3-1 first-leg victory over Arsenal and reports suggest the Gunners’ opened talks to sign the youngster straight after the final whistle.

Former head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, identified Sarr as a potential target for Arsenal before he decided to leave the club last month.

Denis Suarez has been a major disappointment since his January loan move from Barcelona and Pires has urged Emery to strongly consider a move for Sarri this summer.

Asked about Arsenal’s interest in Sarr, ex-Gunner Pires told Sport24 : ‘Ismaila Sarr? It would not hurt Arsenal to sign him, but I do not know his price [laughs].

‘He has the profile to evolve at the Gunners. He would adapt quickly to the way of play wanted by Unai Emery.

Pires added: He is a wide player, a dribbler who runs fast and is able to score. I appreciate him very much.

‘Rennes has good players. That’s why I’m not surprised by their performance in the first leg.’

It’s understood Rennes are demanding a fee of £20million for Sarr in the summer transfer window.

Emery has reportedly been handed a transfer budget of around £50m ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, but this figure is likely to increase should Arsenal qualify for next season’s Champions League.
