Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Gunners make Brazilian bid, race for left-back

Arsenal transfer news includes links from across Europe ahead of the summer transfer window

The international break is coming to an end, and that means that club football is on its way back; and with it, the end of the season nears.

There are only three and a half months until the summer window opens, and clubs will be forming their strategy and Arsenal said to be at an advanced stage already.

However with some prospective transfers the Gunners might already be falling behind but there is also plenty of hope around for the future.

Here are the latest updates and rumours for the players Arsenal have been linked with.

Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal have been linked with this Brazilian wonderkid for a while now, and Globo Esporte feature an interview with the player in which they state his next destination "should be Arsenal".

Fox Sports in Brazil are also running this line, stating that the Gunners have made a bid of £5.1m for the 17-year-old, who has been on trial with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona in the past, but a move did not materialise for him at the time.

Martinelli is in the process of obtaining Italian citizenship, which would make a move to Europe easier. We profiled the striker earlier this month, below.

Unai Emery's reshuffle

Unai Emery has made the decisions over where to trim players from his squad during the summer, and it’s not good news for some of the top earners.

The Gunners are keen to offload Henrikh Mkhitaryan as well as Mesut Ozil this summer as they try to reduce their huge wage bill, according to the  Daily Mirror.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan celebrates with Mesut Ozil after scoring against Bournemouth.

Arsenal will also reportedly sell Mohamed Elneny, Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi, in addition to seeing Petr Cech, Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey leave at the end of their contracts.

On top of that, they are not expected to pick up the option to sign Denis Suarez in the summer, with the Barcelona winger so far failing to impress Emery.

In terms of where that money will be spent, Arsenal are reportedly targeting a new left-back, back-up goalkeeper and a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.

Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney is listed as one possible target, as well as Nicolo Barella, though the Cagliari midfielder’s arrival would depend on Arsenal qualifying for the Champions League, due to the Serie A side’s demands.

Alex Grimaldo

Juventus have reportedly entered the race to sign Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.

The 23-year-old has been linked with Arsenal as the Premier League side search for a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal, but after no bid was made in January, other clubs have reportedly taken a shine to the defender.

Benfica defender Grimaldo

Grimaldo has been linked with Manchester United (though with Luke Shaw’s improvement this season it seems a little far-fetched that they would sign another left-back). And now  Tuttosport  say that Juventus are considering a summer move for Grimaldo.

Juve are known to be in the market for a defender on the left flank, with Real Madrid man Marcelo a repeated rumour doing the rounds. However, following Zinedine Zidane’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu, Marcelo may just stay a little while longer.

Which means that Juve could make a €40m move for Grimaldo, a price that Arsenal would find difficult to justify if they were not competing in the Champions League next season.
