Arsenal manager Unai Emery is looking to strengthen several areas of his squad this summer but with an allocated £45million transfer budget he has been restricted as to which players he can target.

The Spanish boss is short one forward in his squad after making the decision to allow the injury prone Danny Welbeck to leave the club after his deal expired in June.

As a result Emery could be tempted by Real Madrid’s offer of Mariano Diaz, who they are willing to let leave Spanish capital for a reduced fee of just £18m.

Emery will no doubt need cover for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette if Arsenal are to compete for a top four place in the Premier League this season and avoid missing out on Champions League football for a fourth straight year.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane has been overseeing an overhaul of his squad as well this summer and has deemed Diaz surplus to requirements at the club.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old forward, who hails from the Dominican Republic, he hasn’t quite cut it at the Bernabeu.

After being a part of the team’s academy he spent a couple of years with Real Madrid's second reserve team and then Real Madrid Castilla before being given his chance for the Los Blancos first-team by Zidane in 2016.

However, despite only making a handful of appearances for the first-team he was sold to Olympique Lyon for €8m (£7m).

The young striker showcased his talents in France, scoring 21 goals in 44 games for Lyon, which in turn saw Real quickly trigger the buy-back option on him at a cost of around €23m (£21m).

Last season Diaz only managed three goals in 13 La Liga appearances but that hasn’t stopped several teams still being interested in the player, especially given the cut-price fee Real are now willing to let him leave for.

In other transfer news Emery is also close to completing a deal for Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba.

The €30m (£27m) deal will not take too much out of the Gunners' transfer budget as payments for the centre-back are expected to be made in instalments.

However, as part of the agreement, the 18-year-old will be loaned back to St Etienne for next season.

It might not be the ideal outcome for Emery given that he is looking to strengthen his defence this summer, however, one more year of development in Ligue 1 for one of football’s highly-rated young centre-backs isn’t going to be detrimental to the player.

Arsenal are also still trying to finalise a deal for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.

The 22-year-old is seen as a player would could fit into Arsenal’s first-team next season, however, the Scottish champions are holding out for £25m for the Scotland international and have already rejected two bids from the Gunners.
